Strange happenings in the postal system
Somehow, I seem to have gotten onto a few mailing lists.  The first two were strange enough, and now I find them linked....  I've been receiving several large packets from various places in and around Portland, Oregon, trying to get me to travel there.  And when I say large, I'm talking about bound-in-plastic, roughly twenty Entertainment Weekly-sized magazines in full color and expensive looking paper.

Also, I've gotten a couple of things mailed to Joel Levitz, president of Carnivores Unlimited.  Today I got something from Oregon's Mt. Hood Territory addressed that way, so I suppose that's just one mailing list I somehow got on.  And now that I think about it, that also explains the large amount of offers I've been getting for Small Business credit cards of various brands.

But things don't seem to stop there.  Today I also received the 145-page, full-color April 2005 edition of a magazine entitled "Black Enterprise: Your Ultimate Guide To Financial Empowerment."  Looking at the address label, I seem to have a subscription through Feb '07.  And yes, flipping through the pages does show that everyone featured in the magazine is African American.  Which, last time I checked, I'm not.

I suppose it doesn't bother me that these companies are wasting huge amounts of money on me.  It's their money, they can do what they want with it.  But what does bother me to some extent is the waste of other resources being tossed into this.  A small forest (of constantly increasing size) has been destroyed so these people could send me information I did not request, do not qualify for / can not afford, do not want, and generally toss without looking at.  And like I say, I don't even know what lists I'm on or how I got there (as president of Carnivores Unlimited, no less), so it's not like I can just make it stop.

Welcome to the current state of American business....

have you checked your credit history lately, just to make sure no one is taking out business loans in your name or anything?

Crap.
Hadn't even occurred to me. Damn...

Do you (or any other helpful readers) know of any free credit report agencies? =/

As it turns out, I don't have to worry.
It was a practical joke somebody was playing. They've now told me about it, and I'm less panicky.

Thanks for your help, though!

Seems appropriate to me...
OK, you're not African-American, but OTOH you ARE a carnivore!
