State of the What?
Ya know, it occurred to me earlier tonight that "The state of the..." is overused, but mostly in one specific way. State of the Union is obvious, as is State of the Art. Those have become just part of the vocab. You learn their meaning right after "botony" or "velociraptor" in second grade. But there's another one that I hear, or rather read, all the damn time. It makes no sense, but it's what people generally use.

And it never varies.

For some reason, when people talk about where they are in their own lives, what's going on, that kind of thing...they title that post as "The State of the Duck."

Where the hell did that come from? Why is it the way pretty much everybody does it? What's up with that damn duck?

How did I know that was coming?
When I left this post up, I thought to myself, "Shing's likely to be the first one to post something."

Glad to hear you're OK, though!

I have never heard or seen this phrase in use before right now...Can you point to some examples of this?

And anything posted by shingkhor doesn't count.

OK, now I'm a-freakin'.
I've seen it in print a number of times. Coulda sworn I saw Wil Wheaton post a State of the Duck just recently.

I go searchin', can't find it.

Maybe I'm just hallucinating again.

They're just big fans of Ed Gale, Chip Zien, Timothy M. Rose, Steve Sleap, Peter Baird, Mary Wells, Lisa Sturz, and Jordan Prentice.

I'm gonna get a lot of work done today - I can tell already.

Sorry. Brain's fried today, so I just don't get it.... :(

Didn't expect you to. Figured you'd check IMDB, though.

The way those names cross-reference is better discovered than explained.

must've been crowded in there...

OK, you're right. That is far too funny!

F...orget the Duck.
Let's talk about the State of the Porcupine.

I can't make my mind up about 'em, but I think they've introduced a very interesting concept. Good or bad, this is worth investigating.
