Geek contest
So the other night, Jen and I were hanging out with most of the members of an a cappella group from CalTech, Fluid Dynamics.

For the rest of this story to have the impact it truly deserves, you need to take a moment to dwell on that. This is an a cappella group. From CalTech. This is the school upon which the movie "Real Genius" is based, and from what we've heard, the movie was a fairly tame representation of how things are now. And these are the people who, despite being certifiable geniuses, chose to be even more outcast by publicly singing at their science-and-technology-based-school. (as a side note, FD is pretty dang good - this particular story took place just after they'd taken third place at Absolut A Cappella, a contest held annually at USC)

I don't in any way mean to demean these guys and girls - as any reader of this journal knows, I'm fairly obsessed with both smart people and a cappella singers, and this group is the best of both worlds. But to most people out there, both intelligence and collegiate a cappella singing have certain images associated with them, and this combines the extremes of both of those worlds. That's kind of what this entry centers on, so I wanted to make sure we were all on the same page.

OK, got the full geekiness of the concept? Good, then we can move on.

At one point in the conversation, we were talking about playing games or something along those lines. I don't remember how the conversation flowed exactly, but it somehow came out that Jen and I met indirectly through AOKP. For my newer readers, AOKP is a LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game).

The members of Fluid Dynamics declared that we're geekier than they are. They literally bowed to our geekiness.

I think this may very well make us geek royalty. And we couldn't be more proud. =)

Nope.
Sadly, I've got to admit this one is beyond me. It sounds vaguely Ash-like, particularly the evil version from Army of Darkness (Little goody TWO shoes!), but it's been quite some time since I've seen it so I can't say for sure.

When's the USC transition happening? Will there be auditions in your future? =)

Re: Nope.
It's from Age of Empires II, one of the taunts. Same era as Netscape Navigator (what a terrible browser). Great guess w/ AoD though - I'm sure that bad Ash could've ad-libbed it - and it's only a letter off on the acronym. no worries, you can be an honorary geek. =)

I graduate in June (barring any natural disasters), and if I'm feeling cocky might try for an a cappella group. Anyone but the Sirens. ;-)

Speaking of geekiness, Ditch Day is Tomorrow. Here's some photos from last year's... http://pr.caltech.edu/events/ditchday/2007/pictures/ Hopefully I won't burn the side of my face off this year!

And yes, LARPing is geekier than anything I've ever done, and I'm a hardcore computer scientist. Well done. :D

On second glance, those photos actually aren't all that interesting. Here's a captioned photolog of my adventure last year: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2000370&l=e1dfd&id=1307760043
