I've now had two people hit me with the major Harry Potter spoiler that's going around.  One via an e-mail with a link and no warning of what I was getting myself into, and one by posting it on her LJ with no cutting and, again, no warnings.

It got me to thinking about my whole spoiler phobia, and how I'm kind of a contradiction when it comes to that.  I download every movie trailer I can get my hands on, but I hate it when people inflict spoilers upon me.

But I think that's the difference.  When I watch a trailer, it's my decision to do so.  I'm the one who actively says "yes, I will check this out" or "nah, I'll skip that one."  When someone whose life I care about posts on their page with no warning, it's out of my hands.  The e-mail wasn't on the same scale, because I still had to click the link to get to it, but it still wouldn't have been much effort to give a word of warning.  One word is all it woulda taken.

Anyway, I reiterate my request that people try to be friendly to those of us who are spoilerphobes.

For the rest of you, here's the yahoo article with the Harry Potter spoiler about book 7 that everybody's talkin' about.

Ah hah!
There's a faulty assumption in your reasoning.

You figured that I knew already because it's on all the news pages.

Catch the hidden assumption?

Yup. I don't read the news.

No worries. You were correct that I knew already - like I say, you were the second person to point it out to me. Not that big a deal, I guess.

Although for the sake of pointing it out, I didn't know after book 4. Somehow managed to escape that one, if I remember correctly. (Which I rarely do, but still....)

Realistically, there is no escape on this one. I'm guessing it's only a matter of time before the speculation hits my campus of who and under what circumstances, at which point I just have to walk by the wrong place at the wrong time and it'd be spoiled. Book 7 is just too big a phenomenon to be able to walk into the bookstore when it comes out (WHEN?!?!?) with a completely clean slate.

But let me reiterate -- just because you've known it forever doesn't mean it's not a spoiler.

And more importantly, Voldemort can't stop the rock!

Re: Ah hah!
I should redefine - I don't read news pages either, but I do have a yahoo home page that comes up when I check my mail, and it was plastered all over *that*. heh.

I think my worst one was reading lord of the rings. I went to see the first movie as I finished the first book. My friend turns to heath as we're leaving - "I can't wait to see *character's* return."

Me: He comes back?!

Him: Oops.

I had book 6 ruined for me by a massive spoiler. I hope to avoid HUGE ones this time.
